Thalassa is a six-bedroom beachfront home overlooking the beautiful Mawella Bay

on Sri Lanka’s south coast. Striking architecture, lush tropical gardens and interiors

rich in colour, texture and personality make it a wonderfully relaxed place to gather

with family and friends.

Designed by a protégé of Geoffrey Bawa, the 8,500 sq ft house pairs strong concrete

forms with warm furnishings and colourful textiles, while Sri Lankan art spills across

every wall.

It’s the sort of house where the light does beautiful things in the late afternoon,

where the jungle peeks into the sitting room, and occasionally the dogs do too!

Light-filled and individually furnished, each double bedroom has its own ensuite

bathroom and a character all of its own.

There are numerous outdoor living areas for lazing, lounging or professional

napping, alongside a generous sitting room for afternoon reading, and a large dining

room for long meals and evenings spent in excellent company.

At the heart of the house is a private pool, its handmade green and turquoise glass

mosaic shimmering like a mermaid’s tail. Just beyond, through the garden gate, lies

the soft golden sweep of Mawella Bay. A massage temple offers another space to

unwind.

A resident team looks after the house, with an on-site chef cooking Sri Lankan and

international dishes, daily housekeeping and laundry. The house tuk-tuk is on hand

for local trips.

Days at Thalassa unfold at your own pace: a morning by the ocean, a long lunch, a

swim, then somewhere comfortable to settle as evening arrives. It is a home with

character, space and a sense of ease.
